LOST DUTCHMAN PARK EVENTS March 2011
Please join us for exciting interpretive ranger and volunteer naturalist guided hikes and family-oriented programs at Lost Dutchman State Park. Fees for guided hikes and programs are included in the party entry fee of $7 per vehicle (registered campers free) or with your annual pass. Reservations are not required unless specified in the program description. 480-982-4485.

Superstition Explorer Hiking Series – Every Wednesday

March 2: 8:30 a.m., First Time Hikers (2 hours)
This introduction to hiking hike starts on Treasure Loop Trail, then converges to Jacob Crosscut Trail. The trail includes a small steeper and rockier section followed by a smooth, well maintained section giving hikers experience in both hiking terrains. The hike is 2.5 mi., with a 50 ft elevation change. Meet at Cholla Day Use Parking.

March 9: 8:30 a.m., Pet Friendly Hike
This hike will travel north along Jacob’s Crosscut Trail into Tonto National Forest from the Amphitheater Parking lot, Siphon Draw Trail, through Forest Service boundary gate to Jacob’s Crosscut Trail Junction to First Water Users Road. This is an easy hike with little elevation gain on a very well maintained trail; distance 5.4 miles r/t. Don’t forget a leash and water for your dog.

March 18: 8:30 a.m, Geology Hike
Treasure Loop Trail and return, 2+ miles, round trip. Elevation change: approx. 150’. Along the hike, discussions will cover the Superstition Mountain geology, legends and lore. Easy 2 ½ hours, Meet at Cholla Day Use Parking.

March 26: 5:30 p.m., Sunset Hike
Treasure Loop trail to Jacobs Cross Cut to intersect with Siphon Draw Trail then north on Discovery Trail. By the time hikers reach Siphon Draw, the Superstition Mountains will be illuminated and the sky full of color especially when there are a few clouds. Elevation change is 102’ on very well maintained trails. Meet at Saguaro picnic area. Easy. 2 hours.

March 30: 8 a.m., Moderately Challenging Hike
Join us at Siphon Draw Trailhead for a 4.2 mile r/t hike to the basin (slick rock waterfall area)l A steady uphill grade provides hikers the opportunity to exercise leg muscles and heart. Come prepared to hike on a less than smooth trail. Elevation change: 1030’. Wear sturdy trail or hiking shoes; carry at least 2 bottles of water and brink a hiking snack for a 3 hr. hike

Award winning children’s author and storyteller presents some of his favorite stories as well as Rattlesnake Rules. Bring the children with you. Cholla Day Use area**

What are the ways to prospect for gold? Demonstrations and discussions in Cholla Day Use area.**

Saturday, March 19 – Randy Babb
To discuss wildlife adaptations to desert environs at the Cholla Day Use area.**

Saturday, March 26 – Ted Newman
Singer-songwriter entertains with music and humor, Cholla Day Use area**

Star struck Program (astronomy)

Friday, March 25th
Learn about the night sky, constellations and planets with local astronomer Bill Dellinges. Parking and seating at campground amphitheater: 7:30 start time.

Ranger Led Sunset/Moonlight Hike

March 17th, 6:30 p.m.
Join us for a guided 2.5 mile hike on Jacob’s crosscut Trail at the base of the mysterious Superstition Mountains – Hikers should dress appropriately and wear trail shoes or boots. Please bring a flashlight in case of cloudy conditions Trail NOT suitable for strollers or walkers. No pets, please. Large groups of 25 or more need to call in advance for special arrangements (480) 982-4485. Parking in Saguaro Day Use Area.
